Responding to the new government’s new Renewing Fostering strategy paper, Dr Jo Casebourne, Chief Executive of Foundations, said:
“We welcome the Department for Education’s commitment to create 10,000 more foster places so that more children can experience the loving relationships they need to flourish. It is hugely encouraging that the new fostering plan recognises the central importance of stable, nurturing relationships in helping children thrive.
We are also pleased to see the government prioritising evidence to improve outcomes for foster children, including plans for a new innovation programme to test approaches to support foster placements, to learn what works, and to scale models that have a strong evidence base.
The additional pledge to strengthen support for foster carers to improve retention is an important step to ensure that foster carers get the support they need, especially those who support children who face challenges due to past trauma or have unrecognised needs.
Foundations will be publishing a Fostering Practice Guide in early summer, commissioned by the Department for Education, to provide local authorities with clear, evidence-based recommendations on the best approaches to supporting foster families. We look forward to contributing to this renewed national focus on strengthening fostering and improving children’s outcomes.”
