Dr Jo Casebourne, Chief Executive, said:
“Giving all children the best start in life must being with ensuring they have the basics to thrive. That’s why we welcome the Government’s announcement today that it will remove the two-child benefit limit, lifting hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty.
“Growing up in poverty inflicts lasting harm on children’s life chances, has been linked to more children entering the care system, and can contribute to poorer mental health for both parents and children. Parents facing adversity often lack the resources and help to provide the supportive and consistent family environment that children need to thrive, despite their best efforts.
“We also welcome the recent news of additional investment in the Families First Partnership programme – helping local authorities to drive reforms aimed at supporting more families to safely stay together outside of the care system, underpinned by the best available evidence.
“In a tight financial climate for local services, it’s vital that we are directing our funding and attention toward what we know works, including effective targeted support, if we are to shift the dial on outcomes for children and families.
“We now look forward to hearing what further measures will be implemented in the child poverty strategy, as well as how the Government will tackle the lasting, damaging impact of domestic abuse on children, in the upcoming VAWG Strategy.”
