Government announces £500 million of new funding for councils with responsibility for adults and children’s social care – comment

Comment from Dr Jo Casebourne, Chief Executive at Foundations:

“Today’s funding announcement is a meaningful contribution which will go some way towards tackling the current social care crisis. Now more than ever, we must invest in targeted support and resources that improve outcomes for children.

“We know that keeping children within their family networks, where it is safe to do so, leads to better outcomes and reduces demand on the social care system – and that this is achievable with high-quality, carefully targeted support for families. This is why we welcome the emphasis from the government on expanding family help and targeted early intervention, as well as kinship and foster carer availability.

“The effective allocation of these funds is just as important as the sum. Investment in children’s services must be underpinned by evidence and rigorous evaluation of what we know works to deliver positive outcomes – and to ensure smart investment and value for money, while delivering what’s best for children across the country.”
